University Students

Here are the steps you need to follow in order to request your Promise Zone Scholarship.

A resident student attending in-state, non-OCC, institution is eligible for up to $1,500 per semester for a total of $6,000. (If the awarded Pell Grant dollars exceed $1,500 no Promise Zone money will be awarded. Pell grant dollars awarded in a given semester will be subtracted from that $1,500. Ex: if student receives $1,000 in Pell Grant, the Promise Zone will pay $500.)

Below are the documents you need (a computer screenshot of your documents) to request your Promise Zone (PZ) scholarship at any NON-OCC school.

*Do not send a cell phone picture of your computer screen.

Once you send these documents, the Promise Zone Executive Director will respond with the exact dollar amount that will be mailed, in the form of a check, to your college or university.

If you wish to use PZ funds, your school must be located within the state of Michigan. Your FAFSA must be successfully completed and processed by your college or university.

You need to do this process every semester for funds.

Things to send for 2-year and 4-year institutions.

Documents needed for scholarship consideration
• • Student ID Number
• • Screenshot of college financial aid award letter - (this verifies that your FAFSA is complete and verified)
• • Screenshot of class schedule
• • Screenshot of school tuition bill

To renew the scholarship
• Send the above documents, plus the recent college report card. (to remain eligible, a 2.0 minimum GPA is required)

You need to do this process every semester for funds. Make sure screenshots include your school logo or banner so it looks official.

Oakland Community College Students

Students attending OCC should notifytraore.moussa@hazelparkpromise.org, Promise Zone Interim Executive Director Moussa Traore, or College Success Coach, Interim Executive Director Moussa Traore that you are taking courses. Notifying the PZ team will allow staff to verify that you are coded in OCC's system as a Promise Zone student recipient.

Steps you need to follow every semester/year.

• • Successfully complete and submit your FAFSA
• • Notify PZ staff that you are taking courses
• • Staff will verify that you are coded as a Promise Zone student and that we have your waiver on file.
  • • If the waiver is on file it allows OCC to bill us for your tuition and fees
  • • It also allows us to troubleshoot on your behalf if you run into any issues
• • Register for courses
• • Go to class
• • About 4-5 weeks after your semester starts the Promise Zone will receive your tuition bill. We will make payment directly to school.

*We must have a waiver on file for all students for us to receive your bill. You should have signed the waiver during your high school senior year. If you did not sign it,to download the waiver.

Failing to submit a waiver form can result in deregistration from classes and the Promise Zone won't be able to do anything until we receive your signed waiver form
